Mössbauer Spectroscopy Site

Condensed Matter Physics is a broad area of scientific inquiry that cuts across strict disciplinary boundaries to encompass areas of physics, chemistry, biology and materials science and engineering. Our studies lie in four distinct areas of condensed matter physics: 1) Cluster science and the transition from molecular to bulk behavior with increasing cluster size; 2) Nanoscale magnetism, fundamental studies and applications to nanotechnology and nano-medicine; 3) Multiferroic materials; and 4) Iron proteins and iron metabolism.

We use Mössbauer Spectroscopy to probe the electronic and magnetic structure of molecular and solid-state materials (amorphous or crystalline) in combination with SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) magnetometry. Current emphasis is on magnetic nanosturctures and their application to nanotechnology, medicine, and biology.
