Teaching

  • Undergraduate courses

    • Introductory Ecology, Bio 3255
      Fall semester, every year
Instruction expected to be shared with V. Iyengar in F09.
Fulfills distribution requirement in Population Biology for Biology majors.
Writing Enriched; also fulfills Core Curriculum's Research Requirement in Biology.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent, or permission of the instructor.
Can count for elective credit for Ethics or Environmental Studies concentrations, or for the Environmental Studies or Environmental Science majors.

    • Animal Behavior, Bio 3011 (lecture component)
      Usually Spring semester, even years.
Instruction shared with V. Iyengar in S09.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent, or permission of the instructor.
Can count for elective credit for Cognitive Science concentration.

Note that Villanova Biology majors must complete the companion lab course (Bio 3012) to earn Writing Enriched, Research, and Population Biology distribution credits.

    • Animal Behavior Laboratory, Bio 3012
      Usually Spring semester, even years
Instruction shared with V. Iyengar in S09.
Fulfills distribution requirement in Population Biology for Biology majors.
Writing Enriched; also fulfills Core Curriculum's Research Requirement in Biology.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent.
Corequisite: concurrent enrollment in Bio 3011.

    • Field Ecology & Evolution, Bio 4451 (lecture component)
Usually Fall semester, odd years. This course is a prerequisite for Bio 4452 in subsequent Spring semester.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent, plus at least one relevant science course as additional background, or permission of the instructor. Students must also either plan to complete Bio 4452 in the subsequent semester or register concurrently for the matching section of Bio 4452 (we strongly discourage taking the Bio 4451 lecture course alone, because its primary purpose is to prepare students for the corresponding field course).

    • Field Ecology & Evolution Laboratory, Bio 4452 (lab component)
Usually Spring semester, even years; mainly involves extended field trip, usually before the start of Spring classes, followed by data analysis, report preparation, and discussion.
Fulfills distribution requirement in Population Biology for Biology majors.
Writing Enriched; also fulfills Core Curriculum's Research Requirement in Biology.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent, plus at least one relevant science course as additional background, or permission of the instructor. Students must also either complete Bio 4451 in preceding semester or register concurrently for the matching section of Bio 4451.
Can count for elective credit for the Environmental Studies concentration, or for the Environmental Studies or Environmental Science majors.
Counts for Core Curriculum Diversity III credit.

    • Conservation Biology, Bio 4801
      Spring semester, odd years.
Writing Enriched; also fulfills Core Curriculum's Research Requirement in Biology. Does not fulfill distribution requirement in Population Biology for Biology majors.
Prerequisites: General Biology I & II or equivalent and Bio 3255, or permission of the instructor.
Can count for elective credit for the Environmental Studies concentration, or for the Environmental Studies or Environmental Science majors.

  • Graduate courses

    • Tropical Biology
Graduate course numbers for Field Ecology course pair (Bio 4451 + 4452) when offered with focus on Mexico.
Prerequisites: at least one undergraduate or graduate course in ecology, evolutionary biology, or animal behavior, or permission of the instructor.
Next offering (tentative): Fall 2008, lecture; Spring 2008, field trip & lab course.

    • Conservation Biology
Graduate course number for Conservation Biology course (Bio 4801).
      Next offering (tentative): Spring 2009

    • Vertebrate Ecology, Bio 7105
Lecture + laboratory + field trips.
Prerequisites: at least one undergraduate or graduate course in ecology, evolutionary biology, or animal behavior, or permission of the instructor.
      Next offering: Fall 2010 (tentative)
